The autonomous mobility hack
The Big promise of autonomous mobility was that it would help us save time, one of the most precious goods of our current era. We would be able to work, sleep or relax on the move while our cars would be doing all the driving. That vision still seems a long way off today - and it would probably do us good to adjust our expectations (check our recent post about that in the comments) – but there are already ways that you can save time in cars with semi-autonomous features.
Our CEO Patrick Vanbrabandt uses his car’s level 2 automation - with active cruise control, traffic jam assist, collision avoidance etc. - to free up cognitive space and develop some of his best ideas. It’s well known that the combination of movement and allowing the mind to roam is great for creativity. In fact, research showed that driving down a clear road (so not in gridlock) dials down the conscious part of our brain and pushes it towards a more automatic state where the mind can wander and get new ideas. So, the less we’ll need to actively drive in our mostly automated cars, the more it frees up our mental capabilities and the more it might help us innovate.
The second way that even level 2 automation can help us save time is this: the fact is that we are more and more evolving towards conversational interfaces and autonomous AI agents. If that comes true, we will be able to do a lot more work in our cars, even if they aren’t 100% self-driving. In fact, at the moment, there are already quite a few things that conversational interfaces allow us to do. Just think of how you can use the conversational interface of ChatGPT on your phone. Or the new Apple Intelligence on your iPhone that will integrate an updated version of Siri as well as OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
So, there are and will be different ways to save time in our cars, even if most of them only have level 2 autonomous driving for the moment.
